According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the ban on toys and children’s products that contain some types of phthalates, which are used to soften or harden some plastics products, has not caused a shortage in children’s merchandise, but forced some companies to adjust to producing goods without the plastic softeners. The article reports that while some manufacturers and industry representatives are still “on the defensive,” companies such as McDonald’s, which makes the toys included in its Happy Meals, have embraced the phthalate ban to “ensure their products are safe and comply with legal requirements.”
