According to the Seattle Post Intelligencer, “major loopholes” in federal law prevent the U.S. Food and Drug Administration from approving the safety of cosmetics and personal-care items, resulting in many products on store shelves allegedly containing chemicals that may be linked to “cancer, birth defects and reproductive harm.” Two suspected toxins include bisphenol A (BPA), reportedly found in “babies’ bottles, tennagers’ water bottles and in the lining of soda cans,” and phthalates, used to soften some plastics.
