Maine study pushes for policies to protect public from potential toxins

The Bangor Daily News reports that environmentalists and health groups are pushing for new policies to protect the public from potential toxins found in everyday consumer products after a study revealed the presence of dozens of industrial chemicals in 13 Maine residents. On average, the Alliance for a Clean and Healthy Maine detected 36 chemicals in each participant. Some of such chemicals can allegedly be found in water-repellant clothing, nonstick cookware and “many plastics.” The authors of the study describe such plastics chemicals, called phthalates, as “hormone-disrupting chemicals that threaten reproductive health.”
