According to a study by Loyo-Rosales et al. published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry (J. Agric. Food Chem. 2004, 52, 2016-2020) titled “Migration of Nonylphenol from Plastic Containers to Water and a Milk Surrogate,” concern over human exposure to the chemical nonylphenol (NP), which is used in some plastic products, increased after the discovery of its endocrine-disrupting potential. The chemical reportedly leaches into milk and water from plastic food and beverage containers. Chemical exposure as early as the fourth week of pregnancy can allegedly result in impaired male fertility of the offspring.
