In her first blog post for “Basil & Spice,” Dr. Jane Muncke warns about the dangers from leached food packaging, saying “packaging materials [are] probably the greatest source of food contamination.” According to Muncke, food packaging is usually made of plastic, or has a plastic layer directly in contact with food (i.e. beverage cartons are lined on the inside with plastic, glass jars have a lid of plastic or with a plastic liner inside, carton or paper often have a “glossy,” grease-proof finish which is also made of plastic) and some of the chemicals widely used in food packaging, such as bisphenol A (BPA), have been showing up in body burden studies, where pollutants are detected in people’s blood or urine. Dr. Muncke provides a list of ways to avoid the chemical, including choosing glass to store foods.
