“CNN” reports with the advent of plastics, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, located at a natural collecting point at the center of a set of revolving currents called the North Pacific Gyre, has transformed from a fertile feeding ground to the oceanic equivalent of a “crap-strewn” desert. Researchers estimate up to 80 percent of the trash in the Garbage Patch originates on land, and most likely spends years traveling around the currents of the Gyre before settling in the Patch.
